I've been neglecting this page in favor of my tumblr . But as I look towards compiling images into a book it dawns on my that I need to work more on putting images together as a series as opposed to simply looking at them shot by shot. So to that end, I figured it's time to add another Apartment Project series here. These were done in the fall in BK. Again, I'm so lucky to find amazing models to shoot with who always seem to bring new and interesting ideas and spirit to each shot. Please comment. From time to time, I like to go back to old folders on my hard drive to take a fresh look at previous shoots. When that happens, I tend to end up pulling up shots that I may have overlooked before, but for some reason, they hit me in a new way. These shots are from the first, and last shoot I did with Zach. I've sung his praises here before, and these pics are further evidence of why I've enjoyed shooting him. I didn't really do any edits on this batch (a little bit of clean up on one) so they are pretty much as I shot them.

Chances are I'll keep going back to Zach's pics to find even more stuff. Hopefully I'll do another shoot with him soon.

An Afternoon At the Hotel Chelsea

It's easy to romanticize a city like New York. It's old, it's huge, it's crowded, and it's packed with places that seem as though their only reason for existence is to be dreamed of, revered and romanticized. One such place is the Hotel Chelsea, that den of art, drugs, sex and rock and roll. It's where Bob Dylan, Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix slept. It's where Sid and Nancy sealed the deal on their infamy. It's where Arthur Miller, Allen Ginsberg, and Eugene O’Neil wrote. And so it seemed like a logical place to go for inspiration.

I like shooting in spaces as they are. No lights. No props. No set dressing. I like to let the space speak for itself. And that's what the space does in these photos shot with an up and coming dancer last fall. He’s not a model, but the poses were his own. He moved naturally through the space, finding himself in it, and positioning himself with grace within its walls. I love the quiet and subdued nature of these shots, and how the room becomes just as much of a character in the small stories they tell.

The Apartment Project: Zach, Part 1

Zach and I have shot together 3 times. Each shoot has produced images that are more interesting and engaging to me than the last. It's taken me a while to post them, because each time I go through the raw images, I find new things to explore. So I'm going to break them up a bit and post more later.

That said, Zach is an awesome model to work with, because he's always very trusting, natural and relaxed. He never hits a false or affected pose. Each shot is him as him - shy, yet forthcoming, vulnerable, but confident - often in the same image. I love working with him, and I love the images we've created together.

This is the very first nude photo I ever shot. The photo was taken in 2008 in a tiny studio apartment in Times Square. It was posted here before, but I hated it, and ended up deleting the post, so decided to revisit it, and see if I could make it work. What do you think?

The Procrastination Project

Procrastination - a human behavior characterized by the deferment of actions or tasks to a later time. Psychologists often cite procrastination as a mechanism for coping with the anxiety associated with starting or completing any task or decision. Psychology researchers use three criteria to categorize procrastination: for a behavior to be classified as procrastination, it must be counterproductive, needless, and delaying.
Now couple this characteristic with a photographer who can never decide which of his photos are his favorites, and which achieve the desired effect, and you come up with the reason that it has taken me months to get around to posting the following images.

My appologies to the extremely easy going, and wonderfully cooperative/collaborative model who stood for them.

The Apartment Project - Joshua

I shot these photos with Joshua earlier this spring in Astoria, New York. He was truly one of the more interesting people I've worked with. In talking to him I learned he'd had a life that was far from perfect, even still he had a positive and inquisitive and creative attitude that had kept him from becoming biter or jaded. Fun shoot relaxed and collaborative shoot with a great model that produced some pretty strong interesting images.

So the kind folks over at Try State Magazine stopped by the blog, and they liked what they saw. So much so that they decided to give a shout out. The editor Rob, called some of the shots here

"... subtle, yet in-your-face and very intimate, he shoots on many different planes and its wonderful to see his interests out there on display. I love his composition and where he takes you. His inconsistent use of style and color makes each new project unique. He doesn't seem to have an enormous body of work, but the work he has is solid."

The Apartment Project -

A new series from The Apartment Project. Simply put, becase I don't have a permanent space, I shoot most often with models in their homes. As I continued to work with more models in new spaces, I began to find that I enjoyed it than working out of studio spaces which can be a little cold and lifeless. Working with models in their apartments gives me a new and unique look everytime. These photos were shot in SOHO earlier this year. the model (who isn't a model, but you wouldn't know it) was fun to work with and brought a lot of ideas and energy to the shoot. I'm pretty happy with the results, and will post more later.

A New Set

So I bought an Orbis ringflash, and this is the first set of photos where I had an opportunity to use it. I often shoot with natural light, but I like the look and effect of ringflash, and thought I'd give it a try. Overall pretty happy with the look of it, and the Orbis is a pretty inexpensive alternative to the more expensive high end flashes, so not a bad purchase. Thanks to Michael for being my guinea pig.

The Apartment Project - Rob

This was one of my last shoots of the year with a very cool guy by the name of Rob. It's another shoot for something that I've been working on called The Apartment Project, but the first that the model was cool with me using his images. Rob was a lot of fun to shoot with, and as a photographer himself, he had some great ideas.
